Topeak Pocket Rocket Master Blaster

When you have a puncher out on a ride the last thing you want is a pump that has nothing to offer. We have heard good things about this pocket rocket so decided to give it a shot.

Topeak Pocket Rocket Master Blaster
The manufacture claims that the light weight aluminium shafted pump can easily go to 160psi. We give this a shot and found it went up to 100psi easily enough and 120psi wasn’t too much effort after that. There are a couple of features that make this possible that other mini pumps don’t have, this includes the locking head and the well shaped grippy head.

If you want a mini pump that works and gets you back on the bike quick this is the for you.

Thomson Elite Road Seatpost

Thomson setposts are some the strongest around they are CNC machined from 7075-T6 aluminium. This makes them both light weight and very strong. The saddle is fitted using the seat posts dual bolt clamp design that makes it feel solid and secure.

Where weight is every thing then this probably is not for you as you can get lighter seat posts. If you prefer something a bit more solid than a bit of carbon fibre tube then this is a good choice. Its bomb proof design and easy to adjust the saddle position makes it a winner.

Shimano SH-R151 shoes

These shoes come with a carbon-fibre sole that has hollow channels that help them keep super stiff but save on weight. They have a moulded toe and heel cup that has venting in it and three straps to keep your foot in place.

We think these shoes look great so we put them to the test out on the road. As they are LOOK pedal compatible we left or LOOK peddles on. When we put them on they were comfy and the sole defiantly felt stiff. Out on the road they gave a nice sold responsive feel. After about 15Km we found they started to pinching slightly but anyone with a wide foot can go for the roomier ‘E’ version.

Shimano SH-R151

We liked the shoes and to get carbon soles for the price you can’t complain, they are super stiff. We would have preferred a better buckle thought as these just feature Velcro straps – what can we say we prefer ratchet buckles.

Fizik Aliante

As a cyclist you spend a lot of time on the saddle so its important to get a good one. We have heard a lot of good things about the Fizik Aliante so though we better check it out.

The one we got had titanium rails and was black once fitted it looked pretty standard but the feel is the most important bit. We decided to test it out on a usual 2 hour route. Right from the start it feel comfortable no real need to break it in like with some. About haft way through we decided to drop the height slightly and this also helped as it was starting to get uncomfortable. Since changing the height it was a pleasure to sit on! Really one of the most comfortable saddles we have tested we even decided to go an extra 30 minutes and it still didn’t get uncomfortable.

It might not be the cheapest out there but we defiantly recommend it in fact we are leaving it on the bike now.

Bontrager Race X-Lite Pro

On first look we liked these tyres and have liked previous tyres from Bontrager. Once we fitted them on everything looks they seem good quality and well made they have a silica/carbon tread compound that should give traction when on the road.

Once out on the road they felt good it was slightly damp when we tested them but we still got good grip into the corners. There wasn’t much tyre noise at high speed and they feel smooth on flat tarmac. The one negative is that after only a few hours use there was a lot of cuts on them, this didn’t result in any flats for us but there were more than we would have expected.

Serotta HSG Carbon 2009 £4180.20

The American maker Serotta has brought out its latest offering pitched at high performance racing. It is beautiful made and is full HSG carbon frame giving a weight of 7.2Kg for our setup. Overall the frame looks very slender but it has been reinforced in the key areas of the head tube and bottom brackets using titanium.

The frames tubes seem solid to the touch and this feeling continues our on the road. It is not the stiffest that we have ever test but this is not necessarily a bad thing as it does still solid and responsive enough when accelerating hard or on climbs. It absorbed the bumps of the rough road and gave an overall smooth ride.

Overall this is a great frame but it comes at a high price.

CycleOps SuperMagento Pro turbo trainer

Lets face it turbo trainers might be boring but they beet having to go out in the cold dark rain so here is one of the latest offerings from CycleOps. This one is part of a range of three recently released by CycleOps who have been a leading name in turbo trainers for some time now.

This is sold as a straight out of the box solution with no need for spanners to assemble or adjust. This makes it very user friendly and quick to get going. The bake can be clamped in quickly thanks to the new quick-lock cam lever which is easier to use than older models. The whole thing feels very solid and stable it has an adjustable foot on the front left leg that accommodates wonky floors.

The resistance settings are also very impressive, there are four to choose from and moving between them there is a definite change. Adjustment is don eon the side of the unit so can’t be done while in use.

Overall this is a great unit it’s quieter than a lot we have used and the big bonus is that it feels very smooth to use. If they added a remote control for the resistance it would be even better.

KCNC CB1 Brake Callipers

With standard callipers form Shimano and Campagnolo having advanced greatly to offer much better breaking it leave the main reason for upgrading down to weight. Saving weight is where the KCNC Callipers really shine. There design is very distinctive following KCNC’s desire to produce very high quality CNC machined parts.

An exotic mix of aluminium, scandium and titanium has helped to bring the weight right down to around 82g, this brings it right down to around half of the DuraAce calliper. They have quite a unique pivot system to allow equal breaking on each side as well as a quick release leaver to allow you to get the heels out fast.

The breaking performance does seem adequate in both the wet and dry but they are missing a bit of bite when breaking very hard. They do also have quite a lot of visible flex but this is the trade off for saving the weight.

Overall a good set of very light breaks available for around £169.99 but they do need looking at regularly to keep them working at their best.
